There is a movie that holds perhaps the most amazingly quotable lines of dialogue in the history of cinema. It is so quotable, in fact, that often times individuals will use snippets of this brilliant script in their everyday speech without realizing it. For instance, someone recently asked me how I was feeling while I was in the grip of a nasty chest cold, my response "I've been mostly dead all day". I laughed at myself, and then wondered if I did just unconscious quote
The Princess Bride.
The Princess Bride is literally a film for the whole family. Children love it, romantics love it, and the geek crowd adore it. You have a lovely couple of actors in
Cary Elwes and
Robin Wright playing the romantic leads, Wesley and Princess Buttercup. The charismatic
Mandy Patinkin as the ever revenge quest fueled Inigo Montoya, and
Billy Crystal as a hysterically funny magic man are brilliant casting moves. Who can forget adorable
Fred Savage as the bed-bound grandson to the amazing
Peter Falk, our narrator.
Wallace Shawn is utter perfection as the wicked Vizzini, who finds just about everything "inconceivable". Sweet
Andre the Giant fills the role of the gentle giant Fezzik, who is a loyal friend and who, despite his size, has the most gentle of souls. A bounty of silly baddies, and you have yourself a winning cast. It is this motley collection of characters, and the brilliantly written script of
William Goldman, in the hands of director
Rob Reiner that makes
The Princess Bride a winner on so many levels. You know a movie is one for the ages when you can watch it over and over and still find it wonderful every time.
